GORI applauds the recently issued recommendations by the Ocean Policy Committee

GORI applauds the recently issued “Recommendations for Increasing the Efficiency of Permitting and Authorization for Ocean Exploration, Mapping, and Research Activities” by the Ocean Policy Committee. These recommendations should act as enablers for GORI’s work in the Gulf of Mexico and benefit the coastal communities of the Gulf.

Mapping and exploring America’s coastal and ocean waters provides critical data and information that support the Blue Economy and advance critical economic sectors including maritime commerce, domestic seafood production, energy production, tourism and recreation, and other interests. In 2016, such activities contributed more than $300 billion per year of economic activity, 3 million jobs, and $129 billion in wages to American workers.

Promoting American Seafood and Economic Growth

Promoting American Seafood and Economic Growth

The President signed an Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood and Economic Growth on May 7th, which aims to kickstart offshore aquaculture. GORI is partnering with LSU, LUMCON, NOAA, and Innovasea on a research pilot project for multi-use platform-based offshore aquaculture on the North Padre Island platforms.

Section 1. Purpose. America needs a vibrant and competitive seafood industry to create and sustain American jobs, put safe and healthy food on American tables, and contribute to the American economy. Despite America’s bountiful aquatic resources, by weight our Nation imports over 85 percent of the seafood consumed in the United States. At the same time, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing undermines the sustainability of American and global seafood stocks, negatively affects general ecosystem health, and unfairly competes with the products of law-abiding fishermen and seafood industries around the world. More effective permitting related to offshore aquaculture and additional streamlining of fishery regulations have the potential to revolutionize American seafood production, enhance rural prosperity, and improve the quality of American lives. By removing outdated and unnecessarily burdensome regulations; strengthening efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; improving the transparency and efficiency of environmental reviews; and renewing our focus on long-term strategic planning to facilitate aquaculture projects, we can protect our aquatic environments; revitalize our Nation’s seafood industry; get more Americans back to work; and put healthy, safe food on our families’ tables.

The ocean, like our farmland and stockyards, is where our food is grown and raised. Food quality, availability, affordability, and security are of utmost importance to our wellbeing and ability to thrive as a nation. Our research efforts will be looking at how our offshore platform infrastructure can enable offshore aquaculture ventures to grow fish and other seafood proteins in a sustainable and efficient way.

GORI becomes a member of SeaAhead BlueTech Innovation. SeaAhead is about venture innovation for the ocean. The stresses on the world’s oceans are growing. Global populations are approaching 8 billion people – and 40% of them live near the coast, mostly in cities. At the same time, standards of living globally are rising, bringing many people out of poverty through continued industrialization. This combination of factors presents an acute need, as well as an opportunity, for scalable new technologies and ventures to improve ocean sustainability.

The Gulf Offshore Research Institute (GORI) was awarded a start-up grant from the Fondren Foundation for $125,000. “We are very appreciative of the Fondren Foundation’s generous support of GORI”, said Mr. Kent Satterlee, Executive Director of the Gulf Offshore Research Institute, and we believe the funding will go a long way toward getting our offshore platforms ready for the many potential users in the Gulf. We also appreciate the Foundation’s recognition of the value of these offshore platforms to support recreational fishing, scientific research, and offshore renewable energy. Especially during this time of unprecedented uncertainty and hardship, we want to demonstrate the viability of utilizing this valuable offshore infrastructure and its promise to our ocean economy.”
